“In the city of Alasehir, which in antiquity was known as Philadelphia, Greek forces were accused of creating a firestorm that destroyed 70 percent of its buildings. Many perished in the course of the outrage, while desperate survivors sought shelter wherever they could find it—even, as here, in a hollow tree-truck.”
