“The incinerated carcass of a locomotive lies upended on the strategically important railway line near the city of Usak, around 150 miles east of Smyrna. Usak was the scene of immense destruction during the Greek army’s westward flight in September 1922: it has been estimated that during the fighting around one-third of the city was obliterated.”
